"This is what sets Sako apart, it's what's been key to his success", commented music promoter and talk show host Stepan Partamian. A perfectionist to the core, he works extremely hard both in the recording studio and on stage. Whether he is exploring new territory in Armenian music or giving an original spin to popular dance songs, he treats his material with extraordinary care, calibrating it with a certain artistic daring.
Sako's arrival on the music scene in the 1990s marked a wholly novel approach to modern Armenian music. While many performers relied on covers of safe-bet popular songs and simply adapted them to trendy Western sounds, Sako crafted original material and powered them with an ultramodern sound all his own. His albums present well-balanced ensembles of beat-driven tunes and tender ballads, with a big, ambitious feel pervading his body of work. Sako has complemented his studio output with progressively elaborate concerts, bolstered by lush visuals, full bands and groups of dancers, and a signature performance style of great range.
Over the years the effort has paid off by captivating a global audience hankering for the next level of Armenian music, and earning Sako a string of awards, including Best Dance Album, Best Live Concert, and Best Music Video from the annual Armenian Music Awards. The artist's prolific work has garnered critical acclaim, earning him 10 prestigious awards at various international festivals. The latest accolades came from the Armenian Music Video Awards in 2006, held at the famed Kodak Theater in Hollywood. Sako won the "Audience Choice" award, and went on to donate his monetary prize to the Pyunik Armenian Association of Disabled Persons
Sako's success has also led to opportunities to tour abroad. Overseas concerts and local performances reached a new level this year, as the popularity of the Live Dance Party album created a flurry of requests for special-event appearances. A sequel to the album, Live Dance Party 2, is planned to be released in May 2007.
Sako has appeared on the stages of several world-famous theaters, always receiving a warm reception and closing his concerts to standing ovations. And there's more in store: he has been invited to headline a concert that will be held in October 2007 in Argentina. The event will be attended by thousands of compatriots from throughout Armenian communities in South America, as well as celebrities like Argentinian football star Diego Armando Maradona. As significantly, the concert will come on the heels of a much-anticipated summer performance in Armenia.
