Today Sako’s albums are runaway bestsellers across the Diaspora. He is particularly popular with young, urban Armenians, who have come to appreciate his lush, ultramodern beats mated to an Armenian sensibility. “Our young audiences have eclectic tastes,” Sako says, “and, accordingly, Armenian musicians have branched out into many styles. I’d like to describe my own material as Armenian trance music, which is defined by its spirit of freedom, its dynamic dance grooves, and melodic punch.”

Born to sing, Sako has embraced Armenian music like a true believer. He is not known to bulk from obstacles, always aware that they’re a necessary ingredient on the path to excellence. Thus the artist has cultivated a stoic approach to professional and personal growth, convinced that time will take care of snags and setbacks, and confident that true art will remain at the core, as the one thing that counts. Sako has appeared on the stages of several world-famous theaters, always receiving a warm reception and closing his concerts to standing ovations. And there’s more in store: he has been invited to headline a concert that will be held in October 2007 in Argentina. The event will be attended by thousands of compatriots from throughout Armenian communities in South America, as well as celebrities like Argentinean football star Diego Armando Maradona. As significantly, the concert will come on the heels of a much-anticipated summer performance in Armenia.

“I have always lived with Armenia,” Sako confesses with unbridled emotion. “There’s an inexplicable yearning in me for the homeland. I can’t begin to imagine what it would feel like to step foot on the soil of our motherland... to look up-close at Ararat, that miraculous mountain of our identity, which embodies the profound mystery of our being and perseverance. I should mention, incidentally, that one of my albums was arranged, recorded, and released in Yerevan in 2001. I am particularly proud of the quality of the resulting CD, which had 10 tracks.” Sako’s songs today are among the most requested and played on television programs and Internet radio, including yerevannight.com.

While his popularity grows, the singer also continues to be involved in humanitarian projects that are close to his heart. Recently, when a bone-marrow donor was being sought for a sick child in Armenia, Sako was informed that, out of 15,000 candidates, his blood type was the only one that matched the child’s. Without hesitation, he agreed to a bone-marrow transplant, thus helping save the child’s life. Sako’s readiness was in part driven by a desire to honor the memory of one of his closest friends, the well-known Los Angeles videographer Boris, whose untimely death had devastated him. Now enjoying recognition throughout Armenia and the Diaspora, Sako has appeared in concerts across the United States, Canada, and Europe. What make his sound unique are fresh material, a signature style that has created a dynamic stage persona, and peerless production values. As he keeps polishing his voice, Sako devotes much of his energies to exploring the wondrous layers of the Armenian musical legacy.

Given his passion for the craft, it’s no surprise that Sako’s performances have always entranced his audiences, providing them with the sensations of great art. As the young singer continues to sharpen his skills and further improve his natural gift, he derives fresh inspiration from an ever-growing base of loyal fans.
